The Publisher of National Network Newspaper, Pastor Jerry Needam has said that his media organization will partner with the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to organise awards of excellence to the best practising journalists in the State in 2017.
He said this in his remarks at the inauguration of the National Network NUJ Chapel Executive, which took place in the Port Harcourt office of the newspaper on Tuesday.
According to the Publisher: “Let me use this opportunity to inform you that we will partner with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rivers State Council, to recognize the best practising Journalist in 2017, so that people will know we are serious-minded people, and that is why in National Network, everybody practising Journalism here is a graduate of Mass Communication. If you are not qualified, you don't have a place here. In fact, we have two persons among us who are holders of master's degree. It tells us how serious we are”.
He thanked the Chairman of the State Council of the NUJ, Mr Ayo Tamuno and other Executive members for coming for the inauguration of the National Network NUJ Chapel Executive body.
He said there is a good working relationship between him, the Editor, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief and other members of staff of the Newspaper.
Earlier, the Chairman of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr Ayo Tamuno said he was happy to be in the office of National Network for the inauguration of elected officials of the chapel and administered on them the oath of office during the swearing-in.
Those sworn in include, Mr Sunny Zorvah (Chairman), Mrs Ngozi Anosike (Vice Chairman), Mr Ken Asinobi (Secretary), Margret Ikiriko (Treasurer) Mr Joe Kalu, (Assistant Secretary) and Mr Gilbert Amadi (Financial Secretary).
In his response, the Chairman of the National Network NUJ Chapel, Mr Sunny Zorvah who is also the Editor of the newspaper, again thanked members of the chapel for seeing them worthy to serve them in their respective capacities, assuring that the chapel would try its best to deliver on its mandate and asked for the support of the State NUJ to enable him and his team perform their responsibilities.
He urged the State NUJ to tackle the problems facing the practice of journalism in the State, particularly the issue of quackery.
He asked the NUJ Chairman to thank the Publisher of the National Network, Pastor Jerry Needam, on behalf of the staff, for taking care of the welfare of staff and further thanked the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr Chirs Konkwo for a good working relationship.
Responding, the State NUJ chairman, Mr Ayo Tamuno said the NUJ will set up a task force to tackle the problem of quackery in the profession, saying that the problem causes embarrassment to bonafide journalists in the State.
He thanked the publisher of the National Network, Pastor Jerry Needam, for taking care of the welfare of his staff, stating that National Network comes first among other newspapers in providing welfare for staff.
In his goodwill message, the Vice Chairman of the Federated Correspondents' Chapel, Mr Godfrey Azubike said he was happy with the inauguration and also commended the Publisher of the National Network for being a good employer.
In his vote of thanks, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of National Network, Mr Chris Konkwo said he has confidence in the Executive of the National Network NUJ Chapel, and thanked the NUJ Chairman and his team for coming for the inauguration.
